Breaking Free From Comparison

Wow, I really love her hair. I can't believe she has 5,000 followers already. Her Instagram theme is on point! She's writing a book?! Whoa. She works, takes care of her kids, AND cooks dinner for her husband?! Wait a minute, how do I do what she's doing? How do I get a life like hers?

Does any of this sound familiar?
I imagine it sounds WAY too familiar.

This is where I've been plenty of times. It gets so easy to compare our lives to people's squares on Instagram. I actually decided it was time to take a short break from social media to refocus on what MY calling in life is.

I LOVE Instagram. I think it is a great resource and a great way to reach people around the world. But I also know that it can get in the way of productivity and cause us to compare our lives to little boxes on the internet. Sometimes it takes stepping away from something, even just for a short amount of time, to regroup and refocus. It is imperative that we don't let ourselves get distracted from what OUR calling is.

You see, when we compare ourselves to others, we begin to compare our callings as well. And when we do this, we begin to take God's sacred plan for our lives and twist it into something else. It's a dangerous path to get on, yet it is so easy to get there.

"Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load."
Galatians 6:4-5

Too often, we compare who we are instead of claiming who we are. When you begin to wish for someone else's life through comparison, you begin to lose who you are. We have to get to a place where we can stand firm in who we are and cultivate a change because of it.

We all have a voice and we all have a story to tell with it. We shouldn't let the fear of people hold us back from pursuing the call God has for us. God has designed a plan specifically for me and for you. He didn't design the same plan for any two people. We are originals, designed to do original things.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

Yes... Our callings may look similar, but I promise you our journeys to get there will be far different. Our reach of people will be far different.

So remember this: stay in your lane. We each have our own lane, so we don't need to swerve into someone else's. Imagine driving down a fast highway. You don't want people coming into your lane and you don't want to go into others, because that could potentially cause a crash and devastation. The same thing goes for our lives. If we can't be content with the lane God has put us in, there will only be destruction in our path.

"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."
Galatians 1:10

So break free from comparison. Break free from the idea that you aren't good enough. Break free from the fear of people and their ideas on your life.

The fear of God is much more desirable. So fear God, break free of comparison, stay in your lane, and begin to cultivate a change in your calling.

"Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands."
Psalm 112:1
